The transition from analog to digital is rooted in a logic of substitution. As the subject (paper) and the object (film) become digitized, one material substitutes for another. Within a given set, individual photographs relate to one another through repeated paper screens inside the camera at the moment of exposure. Often the detritus from making the screens appears in the photographs, so that one image offers clues to "complete" another, and the logic of substitution extends to a formal language.
These animations are composed of still photographs merged with cross fade transitions and degraded by Photoshop filters. The photographs will be exhibited in the group show Fixed Unknowns (July 14–September 10) at Taymour Grahne Gallery in New York, curated by Ava Ansari and Molly Kleiman.
